This program is amazing! It combines wonderful knowledge on healing foods with visual diagnostic skills, and you learn how to apply them for many health issues. Along with the great classes, the daily exercise routines and DELICIOUS meals have brought unexpected benefits – in only one month I’ve lost 15 lbs and the pain and swelling of arthritis in my hands is almost gone! I’m staying on for the next two months and looking forward to learning more, and reaping more personal benefits.” Christine Kay, England
With over 35 hours of class/workshop time EACH WEEK – this foundational 12 week program is the most comprehensive and in-depth macrobiotic study available – anywhere. Create a schedule that works for you by attending by the week or the month, returning until you finish all 12 weeks – or attend all three months in a row.
Five core subjects: Macrobiotic Visual Diagnosis, Macrobiotic Cooking, Macrobiotic Healing, Macrobiotic Philosophy, and Macrobiotic Energy Practices and Exercises, are each related to the others, providing you with a wealth of comprehensive knowledge in macrobiotic principles and practice. The hands-on experience you receive deepens your understanding and advances your skills. The opportunity to fully live a macrobiotic lifestyle while you are in the course provides further personal benefits.
After completing Level 3, we developed a business cooking privately for individuals, which has brought us all over the world. It has been a fun, rewarding, and stimulating career.” Jessica Porter (author of “The Hip Chick’s Guide to Macrobiotics”) and Howard Wallen
How the program is structured:
The foundational part of the course is offered in 3 “Levels” that are each 4 weeks (one month) long. Attending Levels 1, 2 and 3 takes 12 weeks (three months) total.
Students may attend the program in the time frame of their choice, from week-long Level “Modules” to one or more full month-long Levels.
Consecutive Session Track:
Attending the levels in consecutive order allows course participants to start with basics and quickly progress into more advanced subjects and skills. It also provides the participants with the knowledge and skill base to easily pass all tests required to receive course certificates. Most participants choose to attend in this progressive manner.
Open Levels Track:
As many individuals have restrictions in their personal schedules due to business or family obligations, those not able to start at the beginning of the course may start any of the first 3 Levels at any week that works for them. Should participants taking this track wish to receive a certificate, they still need to at some point in time (before receiving the certificate) have attended each of the 12 weeks and passed all the required tests. Participants in the Open Levels track that are not prepared to take a test due to not having participated in prior weeks may return to re-take the test at any future time. Participants that do not wish to receive certificates may attend without taking course tests. Please note: A participant who is not starting the program at the beginning (Level 1, week 1), and who does not have prior macrobiotic education will be asked to arrive one day prior to the regular program arrival day so teachers can spend some time with them personally, assuring they will be comfortable and safe with basic kitchen skills and are able to participate smoothly in more the more advanced classes. There is no charge for this one day early arrival.
Post Level 3 Graduation Advanced Studies:
After the successful completion of Level 3, advanced studies are available in Level 4. Unlike the previous 3 Levels, Level 4 is structured in 6 unique week long sessions. One of these six weeks is offered direction after a Level 3 graduation, which is 3 times a year. Completing all six sessions of Level 4 take a minimum of two years.
Levels start four times per year as follows:
Winter session – starting in January
Spring session – starting in April
Summer Session (2 weeks only) – July or August (see calendar)
Fall Session – starting in September

While taking the Levels, I discovered so much about myself. I am also so thankful to have met wonderful people from all over the world. I learned that macrobiotics is not about restriction or focusing on what you can’t have – it’s about finding balance in all aspects of your life, and finding peace within yourself. Most importantly, I feel better now than I ever did growing up.”

For participants from other countries needing U.S. visas:
As Kushi Institute is not licensed as a school by the State of Massachusetts, we do not have the appropriate government school identification numbers necessary for the student visa application form, and therefore you are not eligible to apply for a student visa to attend our programs. Also, for the reason of not yet being licensed as a school, certificates of completion and graduation are not considered “academic” certificates by the United States school board or government.
Therefore, according to U.S. governmental customs and immigration laws, all Kushi Institute program participants needing U.S. visas must obtain the standard 90 day tourist visa.
It is typical for our programs to have a large percentage of participants from other countries, and unusual for anyone registered for the program to have difficulties obtaining a tourist visa. Upon registration we send foreign participants a letter detailing your registration in the program and explaining why the tourist visa is the applicable documentation.
If you have any questions on obtaining U.S. visas please contact us!
